My Homily 2 for Epiphany 2025

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today, we gather to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, a momentous occasion in the Christian liturgical calendar. Epiphany, meaning “manifestation” or “revelation,” commemorates the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus and symbolizes the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles. It is a reminder that Jesus came not just for a select few, but for all humanity.

The first reading which comes from Isaiah 60:1-6 is a powerful passage that speaks to the themes of light, glory, and restoration. It begins by saying:

1. **Arise, shine, Jerusalem, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.**

1. **Arise, Shine (Verse 1)**

The call to “Arise, shine” is a command for the people of Jerusalem to rise up and reflect the glory of the Lord. It signifies a new beginning and a call to action, encouraging the people to embrace the light that has come into their midst. In place of Jerusalem put your name e.g arise Laura, for your light has come. May you shine in this new year.

 **Light in Darkness (Verse 2)**

This verse contrasts the light of God’s glory with the darkness that covers the earth. The thick darkness represents sin, ignorance, and despair, while God’s glory shining upon the people symbolizes hope, salvation, and divine presence. May you shine in this new year. May you be a light for others. X3 o lord, make me shine. Make me a light to shine in this world. Make me shine in my family, make me shine in my place of work, make me shine in my community etc…

The reading talks of the attraction to nations

The light and glory of God are so powerful that they attract nations and kings. This indicates the universal reach of God’s salvation and the idea that people from all over the world will be drawn to the light of God’s presence in Jerusalem.

Gathering of Exiles (Verse 4)

This verse envisions a joyful reunion as exiles return to Jerusalem. It signifies restoration and the fulfillment of God’s promises to bring His people back from dispersion. The imagery of sons and daughters returning emphasizes the renewal of family and community. Epiphany is a reunion of God’s family prompted by Jesus. In Jesus we all come together.

The radiant appearance and joyful heart described in this reading reflect the transformative impact of God’s glory. The mention of wealth and riches coming from the seas and nations signifies material and spiritual blessings, highlighting the abundance and prosperity that accompany God’s presence. In Jesus Christ we don’t lack anything. We find satisfaction in Him.

Today’s first reading is a profound declaration of hope, restoration, and divine light. It envisions a future where God’s glory transforms Jerusalem, attracting nations and bringing joy, prosperity, and unity. The passage underscores the universal scope of God’s salvation and the radiance of His presence that dispels darkness and brings renewal.

The story of the Magi, as recounted in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 2:1-12), is both fascinating and deeply symbolic. These wise men from the East embarked on a long and arduous journey, guided by a star, to find the newborn King. Their journey represents the universal quest for truth and the longing for a divine encounter. Despite the hardships and uncertainties, they persevered, driven by their faith and desire to worship the true King.

Upon finding the child Jesus, the Magi offered three gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Each gift holds significant meaning:

– **Gold**: A symbol of kingship and honor, acknowledging Jesus as the King of Kings.

– **Frankincense**: A symbol of divinity and worship, recognizing Jesus as the Son of God.

– **Myrrh**: A symbol of suffering and mortality, foreshadowing Jesus’ sacrificial death for humanity.

These gifts reflect the multifaceted identity of Jesus—His royalty, divinity, and redemptive mission. They remind us that in Jesus, we find the fulfillment of God’s promises and the ultimate revelation of His love.

Just like the first reading, the gospel also highlights the theme of light. The star that guided the Magi symbolizes the light of Christ, which dispels darkness and illuminates our path. Jesus Himself declared, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). In a world often overshadowed by confusion, fear, and division, the light of Christ brings hope, guidance, and unity.

One of the most profound aspects of the Epiphany is its message of inclusivity. The Magi, who were Gentiles, represent the broader world beyond the Jewish community. Their worship of Jesus signifies that God’s salvation is available to all people, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or background. This universal call challenges us to embrace the message of Christ and share it with others, fostering a spirit of openness, acceptance, and love.

For us today, as we reflect on the Epiphany, how can we embody its message in our lives. Here are a few practical ways:

  1. **Seek the Light**: In our daily lives, let us actively seek the light of Christ through prayer, scripture, and acts of kindness. Let His light guide our decisions and interactions.

If you have ever flown in a plane at night over a populated area, you see many lights and everything starts to look the same. It takes some practice for a pilot to realize which lights among many are the ones that will lead the way to a safe landing. A similar thing happens with boats as a captain tries to figure out which shore lights he or she should aim for to get the vessel safely into the correct harbor.  Today’s gospel story captures our imagination with one element that is similar: the strange, mysterious, and puzzling star. The magi noticed this star that stopped “over the place where Jesus was”; attached importance to this star but not to other stars, somehow knew to let this particular light lead their way. For people of faith, knowing which lights matter and which don’t, which deserve our attention and which don’t, which can lead us to safety and which will put us in jeopardy. That’s what our faith journey is all about: trying to let God do the leading, not someone or something else. The magi can teach us something valuable today: we must be open to the possibility that God might be trying to get our attention to communicate with us.  And like them, we must be willing to leave what is comfortable and unfamiliar and embrace something unknown.  Like them, we must be aware of other stars in our sky, the other voices and influences and temptations that are vying for our attention.  And like them, we must be willing to stay on the course, even if the journey feels long or difficult.  Like them, we must be willing to change our minds, change course if necessary.  And like them, we must have eyes able to recognize what we were searching for and longing for when we finally gaze, encounter, stumble, and uncover it.  The magi knew the importance of such a journey.  We too, may we know the importance of our spiritual journey this year and beyond.

2. **Persevere in Faith**: Like the Magi, we may encounter challenges and uncertainties. Let us persevere in our faith journey, trusting that God is leading us to His truth and purpose.

3. **Offer Our Gifts**: Each of us has unique gifts and talents. Let us offer them to God in service to others, using our abilities to honor Him and bless those around us.

4. **Embrace Inclusivity**: In our communities and relationships, let us reflect the inclusive love of Christ. Let us reach out to those who are different from us, showing them the same acceptance and compassion that Jesus extends to all.

As we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, may we be inspired by the journey of the Magi and the revelation of Christ to the world. Let us embrace the light of Jesus, offer our gifts in His service, and share His love with all. In doing so, we participate in the ongoing manifestation of God’s kingdom here on earth.

May the light of Christ shine brightly in our hearts and lives, guiding us in the ways of peace, joy, and love.

Amen.
